PDF menu vs AR menu: what changes at the table

September 13, 2026 · 6 min

A PDF on WhatsApp still leaves portion size in doubt. An AR menu shows the dish at real size on the tablecloth. Compare friction, ticket and operations.

PDFs fixed printing. They did not fix hesitation.

“Steak with vegetables” in a PDF is still vague. A compressed top-down photo does not show height or volume. The guest asks. The waiter loses the next table.

Side by side

  • PDF / paper: cheap to update on WhatsApp, weak for expensive dishes, zero real scale.
  • AR menu: the dish sits on the table at 1:1, in the browser, with no app.

The useful question is: does your mix depend on the guest imagining the dish or seeing the dish?

What changes in the order

With AR, dessert and steak stop being a leap of faith. Average ticket rises on the item you already wanted to sell, not on a made-up combo.

With a PDF, the table orders what it already knows. The chef special becomes a paragraph.

Operations

Both can use the same QR. The difference is the URL: one opens a file, the other opens a live menu. Changing the special in the studio does not break the table plate.

How to decide

If the house lives on familiar plated meals, a PDF holds. If the house lives on signature dishes, portion and plating, AR is a sales tool — not decoration.
